Clodiagh Gaels Crowned Molloy Environmental Intermediate Hurling Champions
Clodiagh Gaels 1-21 Carrig & Riverstown 1-9
Defeated by 25 points by Lusmagh in last year’s decider, Clodiagh Gaels made no mistakes on this occasion when after trailing by a point at half time, they turned in a splendid second half performance to defeat 14 man Carrig & Riverstown by 12 points in front of 1,970 supporters at O’Connor Pk this afternoon.
The first four points of the game all came from placed balls as Clodiagh Gaels went into 0-3 to 0-1 lead after six minutes. By the thirteenth minute The Gaels still led by 0-5 to 0-3 and then two Liam Langton points edged them four in front when Carrig & Riverstown’s Ryan O’Meara was dismissed for an off the ball incident. The sending off seemed to inspire the C & R men as they outscored The Gaels 1-4 to 0-2 in the remaining 10 minutes fo the half, the goal coming from full forward Michael Kennedy in the 31st minute of the half to go in 1-7 to 0-9 ahead.
On the resumption points from Dwayne Dunne (f) and Conor Gleeson edged Clodiagh Gaels in front and they were never subsequently headed. C & R could only manage two points in the second half as Damien Fox’s charges went on a scoring spree. At the end of the third quarter Clodiagh Gaels had stretched their lead to five points 1-14 to 1-9. In the closing quarter Liam Langton hit four points to bring his total to 12 for the day, while Dunne (2) and Cunningham also sent over to give them a comfortable and deserved 1-21 to 1-9 victory.
